The Potohar Plateau lies between the Indus and Jhelum rivers in northern Punjab province of Pakistan. It receives 15-20 inches of rainfall annually, which supports agriculture of wheat, rice, sorghum and vegetables. The plateau contains the cities of Rawalpindi, Islamabad, and was the site of important oil fields discovered in the 20th century. The plateau has a long history dating back to the Indus Valley Civilization and was an important center of learning as part of the Gandhara civilization.
