This study analyzed 263 Trichophyton tonsurans strains isolated in Japan between 2006-2010 using PCR-RFLP analysis of the non-transcribed spacer region of the ribosomal RNA gene. Four molecular types (NTS I-III, VII) were detected. NTS I was the most common (92.4% of strains) and included all 30 strains from sumo wrestlers, suggesting this epidemic originated from an earlier one among judo practitioners.
