What is Acknowledgments about?

My father used to tell us ghost stories. Not the Scooby-Doo kind, where the malevolent force always turns out to be the grumpy neighbor next door, but the terrifying, existential-threat kind that would send us under our covers at night and make us behave better the next day. We loved them. My father worked for the South Vietnamese Army during the Vietnam War. He died of leukemia shortly after I began the research for this book. I did not know how much he would haunt this project, but my first debt is to his ghost, for leading me to a history that so profoundly shaped his life, and thus ours. This book was difficult to write, and many people had to drag me to the finish line. I owe so much to Nga, who led me to Calyx, and to all the women I met there, who forced me to see (and sense) differently. This book begins and ends with them. Toral Gajarawala, Krishnendu Ray, Maggie Gray, and Jessamyn Hatcher patiently read the same first chapter multiple times in our writing group. Adria Imada and Lynn Thomas shared my interest in skin, and reassured me that writing about it would not be (too) weird.
