The oceanic crust consists of four main layers from top to bottom: 1) basaltic lava flows and pillows that make up the upper ocean crust; 2) a sheeted dike complex underneath the lava flows; 3) a thick gabbroic layer below the dikes; and 4) ultramafic rocks of the lower crust and upper mantle.
