Just when you thought he'd settled for a middling series (True Detective; True Crime; Million-Dollar Wound), Collins breaks out a really good one, knocking over the hard-boiled competition (Parker and Leonard for sure, maybe even Puzo) with a one-two punch: a feisty storyline told bittersweet and wry. Again it's Chicago-based, narrator-P.I. Nate Heller, gangdom's seamier life-forms, unpresent times (this, June '46 - June '47) and a mix of the real--Jake ""Greasy Thumb"" Guzik; Ben ""Don't call me Bugsy"" Siegel--and the made-real--party-girl Peggy Hogan, whom Nate spends a night with, then instructs, ""You shouldn't oughta sleep with strange men."" Peggy's uncle, James Ragen, hires Heller and his A-1 Detective Agency to protect them from the Outfit's bid to take over Continental Race Wire Service. Heller falls in love, Peggy doesn't, quite, and Ragen, with Nate body guarding, is shotgun-blasted, then hospitalized and murdered in a private wing, by mercury poisoning.
