The 2-year old patient presented with respiratory distress, a barking cough, and stridor. His oxygen saturation was 85%. His parents reported 2 days of congestion, rhinorrhea, fever, decreased appetite, hoarse voice and no prior treatment. On examination, the nurse found the child ill-appearing with increased work of breathing, inspiratory stridor, temperature of 102.2°F, heart rate of 130, respiration of 32, nasal flaring, and decreased lung sounds.
