What is Sealants about?

According to the 2019-2020 American Association of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) Evidence-based Clinical Practice Guideline for Use of Pit-and-Fissure Sealants, even with documented evidence of success and clinical guidelines for use, dental sealants are underutilized (Wright et al., 2016). The teeth at highest risk by far are the permanent first and second molars, where fluoride has its least preventive effect on the pits and fissures. The incidence of caries in permanent teeth increases with age, such that children 9-10 years of age have a higher carious lesion incidence than children 6-8 years of age, and children 16-19 years of age have a higher carious lesion incidence than children 12-15 years of age (Wright et al., 2016). The eruption time for first and second permanent molars is 1.5 years, but premolars take only 1-2 months (Antonson et al., 2012). With consideration of all of these factors, sealants provide the best method to prevent occlusal caries in young permanent molars. Sealants on the occlusal surfaces of primary molars are retained at a rate of 74.0-96.3% at 1 year and 70.6-76.5% at 2.8 years (Beauchamp et al., 2008). In 2016, the AAPD Council on Scientific Affairs ad
