This review analyzes data on 118 pharmaceutical compounds detected in raw urban wastewater and effluent treated by conventional activated sludge systems and membrane biological reactors. It finds that while many pharmaceuticals are detected at low concentrations, the highest levels pertain to antihypertensives, beta-blockers, and analgesics/anti-inflammatories.
