What is The Stinger Missile Case about?
This chapter addresses the Stinger Missile Case. At rst it looks at the decision to furnish a likely enemy with 2,300 missiles that were dangerously e ective against United States aircraft. It speci cally described the politics of covert actions between Mujahideen and the United States. The proposal regarding stinger missiles is discussed. Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Planning Fred Iklé and his deputy, Michael Pillsbury, felt that the stinger proposal had obvious and cogent merits. But they found no one to agree with them. But while Pillsbury may have stopped actively promoting stinger missiles at this point, he did not stop thinking about it.Well before September 12, 2001, it was very clear that the Islamic jihadists (the "Mujahideen") who had fought successfully against the Soviet Union in Afghanistan regarded themselves as now at all-out war with the United States and its Western allies. High on the list of dangers the United States faced was the use of sophisticated surface-to-air missiles against our civilian airlines. For, beginning in 1986, we had provided 2,300 such missiles (the highly sophisticated Stinger missile) to what would become our newest enemy at a time w
