This analysis of PGM V. 70 -9 5 suggests that the persuasive analogy at the heart of the spell, "let the eye of the thief be struck and let it swell up until it betrays him", is reinforced by a system of supplemental persuasive analogies, consisting of similar transformations in the magical ingredients (materia magica), the syllables of the incantation (voces magicae), and the graphic arrangement of magical vowels (carmina figurata).
