The Special Boat Section of Combined Operations was well placed under the overall command of Admiral Lord Mountbatten, a leader truly dedicated to the operations of all services, land, sea and air of all allied nations. They were a specialized group of highly trained men recruited mostly from the British Army, but who operated independently of nation or service. Their activities took them to the most dangerous areas of the war, hostile landing beaches and into enemy territory beyond. They were generally brought to their objective areas by submarine carrying their flimsy 'folbots' later passed up through hatches and launched from deck, or by fast surface craft. Once launched they were completely 'on their own', free of any support and dependent for success and for their lives on their flimsy boats, on their superb training, on their physical stamina, and above all on their courage and wits. Their basic mission was to bring maximum damage to enemy forces with a minimum of expenditure of men and stores.
