Richard Arkwright was an English inventor and industrialist born in 1732 who is considered the father of the industrial revolution. He invented the water frame, one of the first factory machines used for spinning cotton. This allowed cotton to be spun much more quickly and efficiently than by hand. Arkwright went on to establish the first water-powered cotton mill and factory system in Cromford, Derbyshire in 1771.
