What is The Mentally Retarded Child and His Family: a Multidisciplinary Handbook about?
Abstract: A multidisciplinary approach to the needs and problems of mentally retarded children and their families is presented. Biological factors causing mental retardation (genetic, perinatal, metabolic, chromosomal and neurological) are reviewed. A multidisciplinary team consisting of a pediatrician, psychologist, social worker, speech and hearing consultant and public health nurse is needed for proper evaluation and management of children and families. Other specialists such as a nutritionist, educational consultant, occupational or physical therapist also may be needed. Special education and community services for the mentally retarded are important aspects of management. The impact of psycho-social factors on children and their families are discussed. (ds)
