What is Civil Liability Post-Acquittal: Catipon Case about?

Catipon bought onions from a company and was told he needed to sign a trust receipt from PNB to get the onions, even though he did not intend to be bound by it. When the company became insolvent, PNB sued Catipon for misappropriating the onions. Catipon was acquitted in criminal court due to lack of evidence. PNB then filed a civil suit. The court ruled that the acquittal did not prevent a civil suit for damages and Catipon was still liable, even without PNB reserving the right to sue civilly.
