What is In the Shadow of the French Revolution, 1788–1815 about?
Abstract The European wars following the French Revolution drew a reluctant United States into conflicts with Great Britain and France. While the Federalist Party, whose presidents were George Washington and John Adams, generally sought to conciliate the European powers, the republicans, led by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, took a more confrontational approach. Jefferson imposed an embargo on American exports and Madison presided over the War of 1812 with Great Britain. The war ended in 1815, after the British had invaded the United States, with no significant changes to the pre-war status quo. During this period the United States also expanded the territory under its control through the Louisiana Purchase.
