A wheeze is a musical and continuous sound that originates from oscillations in narrowed airways. Infants are prone to wheeze due to a differing set of lung mechanics in comparison to older children and adults. In children 5 yr old, small caliber peripheral airways can contribute up to 50% of the total airway resistance.
