The book is devoted to the teachings of a central and tragic figure in Jewish history, who lived in the era of the destruction of the second Temple. The teachings of R. Eliezer and his disputes with his fellow-scholars reflect the conflict between different legal and halakhic schools. The ancient legal tradition, prevalent in the Temple period, of which R. Eliezer was the outstanding exponent, was confronted by the consensus of the sages of Yavneh. They gave currency to new trends in Halakha, following the crucial changes which took place after the destruction of the Temple. The author surveys the Halakhot of R. Eliezer, together with their social economic and political implications, contrasting them with the more practical views of his fellow-sages. The ambivalent attitude towards R. Eliezer in his own and future generations - admiration for his outstanding excellence in Torah, coupled with dissociation from his Halakhic interpretations and theology which led to his excommunication - is convincingly portrayed by Professor Gilat.
