Te Ruki Kawiti was a notable Ngapuhi chief and skilled tactician in northern New Zealand in the late 18th century. In 1840 he reluctantly signed the Treaty of Waitangi but disagreed with British rule. In 1845 he joined Hone Heke in battles against the British to defend Maori sovereignty and land. After many successful battles against the British, Kawiti helped negotiate a peace agreement in 1846 and lived the rest of his life in peace.
