The 2TR-FE engine uses roller rocker arms to reduce friction between the cams and valves. It also uses a hydraulic lash adjuster and variable valve timing (VVT-i) to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions. The camshafts have oil passages for the VVT-i system and hydraulic lash adjuster. A timing chain drives the camshafts, maintained by a chain tensioner to suppress noise. Components are integrated into the timing chain cover for compactness.
