An explosion occurred at the West Fertilizer Company in West, Texas in 2013. The explosion obliterated the fertilizer plant and damaged nearby buildings, including a school and nursing home. It caused over 200 injuries and 15 deaths, including 10 first responders. An investigation found that the explosion was caused by stocks of ammonium nitrate stored unsafely at the facility.
