Rizal was born on June 19, 1861 in Calamba, Laguna. He was the seventh child of Francisco Mercado and Teodora Alonso. Rizal had 11 siblings - Saturnina, Paciano, Narcisa, Olympia, Lucia, Maria, Conception, Josefa, Trinidad, and Soledad. Rizal was a brilliant student who later studied medicine in Manila and overseas.
