Alqurainy et al. discovered a new family of phage satellites called capsid-forming PICIs (cf-PICIs) that encode all necessary proteins for producing small capsids, exclusively packaging their own genomes. Unlike traditional phage satellites, cf-PICIs only hijack phage tails to create infective particles, suggesting a non-parasitic relationship with helper phages. Phylogenomic studies indicate that cf-PICIs have evolved independently at least three times across various bacterial species.
