This diagram shows a coal-fired power plant and its flue gas desulfurization (FGD) system. Coal is burned in a boiler with air to produce flue gas containing carbon dioxide, water, sulfur oxides, and nitrogen oxides. The flue gas then passes through scrubbers where calcium oxide or calcium carbonate is added to remove sulfur oxides, producing FGD material like synthetic gypsum. The cleaned flue gas is emitted from the stack while bottom ash, boiler slag, and fly ash are removed.
