The menstrual cycle occurs roughly every 28 days as the pituitary gland releases hormones that cause an egg to mature and be released from the ovaries. During the first half of the cycle, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) causes egg development and estrogen production. Near day 14, luteinizing hormone (LH) triggers ovulation. If fertilization does not occur, progesterone and estrogen levels fall, causing the uterine lining to shed through menstruation and preparing the body for a new cycle.
