What is Teasing The Turtle From Its Shell: AHK and MAHK in Maya Writing, by Marc Zender about?

The document discusses two Maya hieroglyphs that are often conflated but may actually be distinct - MAHK and AHK. It analyzes their formal features, distributions, and associations to argue they represented different concepts - a turtle shell or carapace (MAHK) versus a turtle (AHK). The author seeks to untangle their identities and highlight methodological issues in Maya sign cataloging and interpretation.
