Preface The Many Worlds of Historical Sociology ## George Steinmetz Pierre Bourdieu suggested that the history of sociology should be included in sociological methods training programs (Bourdieu 1990, 178), since it is an essential component of epistemic vigilance (Bourdieu and Heilbron 2022; Steinmetz 2023, Ch. 15). Yet one striking feature of historical sociology in the United States is its lack of interest in rigorous research on the history of sociology itself (Camic 1997: 229). The paucity of serious research by American sociologists on their own discipline is ironic in light of the fact that the first panels on "historical sociology" at the meetings of the American Sociological Society were actually focused on the history of sociology (Blumer 1933, 11).
