What is Zakat about?

This study investigates whether the distribution of zakat (Islamic alms-giving) funds can reduce poverty in four regencies in Aceh Province, Indonesia from 2008 to 2020. Using time series data and ordinary least squares regression, the study finds that zakat distribution was associated with reduced poverty in Banda Aceh City, Aceh Besar Regency, and Langsa City, but not in Bireuen Regency. The results provide implications for using zakat as a tool for poverty alleviation in local government policy.
