Syed Ahmad Barailly launched the Jihad Movement in 1823 to motivate Muslims to take up armed struggle against the Sikh rule in Punjab and the northwest frontier region of Pakistan. He established his headquarters near Peshawar in 1826 and began defeating the Sikhs in battles, growing his army to 80,000 tribal fighters.
