An SwRI-developed miniature robot called Groundwater Voyager uses neutrally buoyant sensors to create maps of underground caves and channels. The sensors gather data on the shape and size of the chambers as they ride the underground water currents. The patent-pending system was designed to be small, inexpensive, autonomous and able to transmit data once emerging from underground. It aims to provide reliable maps of hard to access underwater environments to help scientists study groundwater systems.
