Scientists investigated the sudden death of 3000 kudu animals that were feeding on Acacia tree leaves. They found that when large numbers of kudus feed on Acacia, the trees produce high levels of tannin in their foliage to protect themselves, which is toxic to the kudus and causes death. The Acacia trees also release ethylene to signal nearby Acacia trees when they are under threat, causing those trees to also increase their tannin production within 50 meters as a defense mechanism.
