What is Drug-Induced Oral Ulcers about?

Ulceration is characterized by a more or less profound loss of substance of the surface epithelium and exposing the underlying chorion. Ulcerations of the oral mucosa are a frequent cause of consultation, as pain induced by this lesion is a frequent functional sign. The etiologies of oral ulcerations are multiple: trauma, deficiency diseases, infectious, hematological, malignant, etc. (Fig. 1, Table 1). Some are induced by drug medications. The exact diagnosis may be difficult. The most well-known drug-induced oral ulcerations are those induced by chemotherapy, associated with an important acute pain that often requires cessation of chemotherapy. In the oral mucosa, drug-induced oral ulceration can be secondary infected by opportunistic organisms (fungi, bacteria), especially in the case of an immune-depressive treatment. Many others etiologies should be noted: • Some ulcerations may be due to direct trauma: it is a misuse of the drug (Figs. 2 and3). • Some ulcerations may be due to deficiencies induced by long-term medication use (Table 2). It is well known that there is a significant association of deficiencies of hemoglobin, iron, vitamin B12, ferritin, and folic acid levels wit
