What is Feasibility study of an intensive tDCS protocol in patients with major depressive disorder – preliminary results about?

Background: Around 30-40% of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) will develop treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Both transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and intravenous (IV) ketamine can be effective treatments in these cases. TMS is usually recommended as a firststep in TRD given the high level of evidence supporting its use and advantageous safety and tolerability profile. There is currently little available evidence on the effectiveness of IV ketamine in patients who have failed to respond to TMS. Objectives: To assess the clinical effects of IV ketamine in TRD patients who failed at least one course of TMS therapy. Method: 19 TRD patients (48.7 years of age; 31.6% female) who failed at least one course of TMS received repeated 0.5 mg/kg of IV ketamine during 60 minutes 3 times a week for 2 weeks (up to 6 treatments total). Clinical effects were assessed using the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Scale (MADRS). Primary endpoints were responses rate (score reductions of 50% from baseline), remissions rate (score < 10 post-treatment), partial responses rate (score reductions of 30% from baseline) as well as average percent improvement. Results: More than half of the
