In very broad terms, Cognitive Sociolinguistics may be defined as the study of language that combines social factors and socio-cultural dimensions with the theoretical framework developed in Cognitive Linguistics, and grounds the analysis in question in solid empirical methods (e.g., advanced quantitative analysis of corpora and/or experimentally retrieved data). In the course of the last decade, a growing body of scholars in Cognitive Linguistics has emphasized the importance of integrating numerous social factors in their research (e.g., Geeraerts 2010), a trend that has been identified as a social turn in Cognitive Science at large (cf. Harder 2010). From a usage-based perspective, language acquisition, for instance, relies on language processing "during embodied interaction in social and cultural contexts" (Ellis 2015: 61). Methodologically speaking, Corpus Linguistics represents the methodological convergence of both Cognitive Linguistics and Sociolinguistics as it investigates "the psychological reality of certain [linguistic] phenomena" (Ellis 2015: 5).
