Rizal spent four years in exile in Dapitan where he lived a productive life. He practiced medicine, taught pupils in the school he founded, farmed, and engaged in community service projects like improving drainage. He studied the local language, culture, and wildlife. However, in 1896 his exile ended when he was transported by ship to Manila as a prisoner and detained in Fort Santiago while awaiting trial.
