Riccardo Giacconi was an Italian-American astrophysicist who laid the foundations of X-ray astronomy. He worked on instrumentation for X-ray astronomy using rocket-borne detectors in the 1950s-1960s and the first orbiting X-ray satellite Uhuru in the 1970s. Giacconi was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2002 for his pioneering contributions to astrophysics through discoveries of cosmic X-ray sources. He held positions at Johns Hopkins University and was principal investigator for NASA
