The document studies the strength of U-bar joints used to connect precast concrete elements under tension loading. It is found that the failure of U-bar joints is governed by either yielding of the U-bars or failure of the confined concrete core. The strength of the joint, referred to as Nc, increases with greater transverse reinforcement, longer U-bar overlap length, and smaller spacing between overlapping U-bars. However, Nc is unaffected by the diameter of the U-bars.
