What is Understanding the Autonomic Nervous System about?

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) has two divisions - the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions. The sympathetic division is activated during "fight or flight" responses to scary situations, increasing heart rate and blood pressure. The parasympathetic division dominates during "rest and digest" periods with no stress, slowing heart rate and increasing digestion. Both divisions work unconsciously to maintain homeostasis through organs and glands.
