What is Spirited journeys : self-taught Texas artists of the twentieth century about?

The exhibition "Spirited Journeys" features exceptional works by diverse artists who exemplify the variety and quality of self-taught or "folk" artists working in Texas during the twentieth century. This exhibition examines for the first time the work of self-taught Texas artists within a cultural and art historical framework, as well as within the broader context of twentieth-century American folk art. It is also the first exhibition of its kind to address environmental work.
This catalog of the exhibition is fully illustrated with 152 color and 82 black-and-white images. It includes a scholarly introduction to the exhibition, essays on the thirty-nine artists in the exhibition, an appendix, a checklist of the exhibition, and a selected bibliography. This publication will be a vital and lasting contribution to scholarship in the field of American folk art and is the first of its kind to substantially record the artistic contributions of these artists.
