Dutch women in the Dutch East Indies were the first to industrialize batik production in the late 1800s. They grew bored with traditional needlework and took up batik making, designing prints with Western motifs. Their "Batik Belanda" productions were exported back to the Netherlands and inspired Art Nouveau artists there.
