Thermal methods such as thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry have almost a seductive appeal in the investigation of heterogenous reactions. In this review, we take a critical look at what is possible and what is not, in such investigations using thermal methods. In particular, some of the pitfalls in quantitative analysis are highlighted and analyzed.
