The monitoring of work areas where hazardous gases, often called hazardous production materials (HPMs), are stored, handled, and used is critical to protecting the health of plant personnel. HPMs include substances that are toxic, highly toxic, flammable, combustible, pyrophoric, reactive, corrosive, or oxidizing, as well as cryogenic and refrigeration gases. This is only the second book on this important area of process safety that has been published in recent years, and is a welcome addition to the technical literature. The book contains eight chapters, four appendixes, a glossary, a list of pertinent references, and a good subject index. The book is published in a spiral-bound, soft cover edition. Chapter 1 is a brief introduction to hazardous gas monitoring, and discusses best industry practice and code intent, occupancy classifications (including research laboratory facilities), alterations to existing facilities, and risk management and corporate safety standards.
