What is Hawaiian reefs and tidepools : a guide to Hawaii's shallow-water invertebrates about?
Hawaii's coastlines include wave-washed rocky shores and ledges, sandy beaches, exposed tide pools, and shallow reef flats. Each of these habitats provides homes for many of Hawaii's most beautiful and interesting animals - the marine invertebrates. Invertebrates include many familiar seashore animals such as crabs, sea urchins, sea snails, and corals. Although widely divers, the one characteristic they share is the absence of a backbone. The name "invertebrate" means "without vertebrae". It takes little in the way of equipment or knowledge to become acquainted with this great variety of marine life; however, it is important to be safety conscious - conscious of both your safety and the safety of the animals you are discovering.
