What is The scientific and regulatory basis for the geological disposal of radioactive waste: D. Savage, ed., Wiley, West Sussex, England, 1995, £35.95, 437 pp., ISBN: 0-471-96090-X about?
This book evolved from the course notes of the staff of the Environmental Division of Intera Information Technologies that has worked for many years on a wide variety of scientific and regulatory problems related to the geological disposal of radioactive wastes. The editor notes at the beginning of the book that because of the public's perception that nuclear weapons and nuclear exposure result in cancer, any activity dealing with radioactive material will be suspect. And the environmental movement has spotlighted the industry, demanding the highest environmental standards. In this book, the authors explore the whole spectrum of geological disposal beginning with an overview of the regulatory criteria, the goals of waste management and the disposal options that are available. Chapter two provides an overview of the major sources of radioactive waste, the type of waste derived from each source and the important characteristics of different waste forms in the context of their disposal options. Chapter three is entitled, "Repository and Barrier Concepts". Its purpose is "to describe the types of geological disposal which have been proposed, with emphasis on the leading concepts involv
