This story is not totally devoted to the men who carried out the huge variety of clandestine small-scale amphibious and beach reconnaissance raids during World War Two. Rather, it is a tale -and a gripping one at that -of the men who, faced with enormous problems of design and production, still managed to provide our Special Forces with great numbers of superb canoes. My own Unit, Royal Marines Detachment 385, based in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), was equipped with an extraordinary variety of canoes. Trained men could easily paddle some over distances of twenty miles. Other canoes were powerfully motorised, and some efficiently sailed. There were, indeed, canoes for every kind of operation, and Detachment 385 carried out raids in Burma, Siam (Thailand), Sumatra, Malaya, and the Nicobar Islands. Canoes were transported on these raids by submarines, destroyers, MTBs and long range Catalina aircraft. The operational requirements for such canoes were complex and challenging. Quentin Rees brings to life the skill and persistence of the men who never gave up, and who, in the end, produced the finest military canoes in the world.
