What is Suicidal Behavior in Army Ants about?
Army ants are known to engage in mass suicidal behavior called ant milling. When their pheromone trail system fails, the leading ants will begin circling endlessly, laying down a pheromone trail that causes other ants to follow and join the circle. This circle grows larger as more ants join, continuing for over 46 hours until all the ants eventually die of exhaustion and hunger. The behavior was first documented scientifically in 1944 and shows how blindly following pheromone trails can doom an ant colony.
