This study investigates the association between periodontitis and type 2 diabetes mellitus in a population served by the Brazilian Health System. Among 216 non-smoking diabetic patients, no significant relationship was found between glycemic control and the presence of periodontitis, nor between knowledge of periodontal disease and diabetes. The findings suggest that the lack of association may be due to the comprehensive care provided by a multi-professional health team.
