What is Achieving Improved Performance Through Managerial Coaching about?

Coaching is not a new phenomenon. According to a 2005 Human Resource Development Quarterly article by Texas A & M University's Gary McLean and his colleagues, various fields such as sports behavior and psychology, youth and adult education, counseling, clinical psychology, family therapy, industrial and organizational psychology, and management have discussed this concept. While a general base of literature exists from a sports and athletic perspective, Roger Evered and James Selman purport in a 1989 article that coaching in the context of management emerged in the 1950s as a master-apprentice type of relationship. It evolved into managerial contexts in the 1970s, with the application of athletic and sports coaching. Whether translating and using the sports analogy of coaching is sufficient for business settings has been questioned, despite Evered and Selman's contention that coaching is the heart of management and that creating a coaching context is an important managerial activity.
