This study investigated the effects of furan compounds produced during the pretreatment of agricultural waste on yeast fermentation. During enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass, furfural and hydroxymethylfurfural are produced. These compounds are toxic to the yeast and inhibit ethanol production. The study identified 5 yeast strains tolerant to furfural and showed that one strain, S. cerevisiae 3451, was highly tolerant even at high furfural concentrations commonly found in pretreated biomass.
