A gas-chromatographtc-mass spectrometric method 1s described to measure the plasma concentratton of sodium dlethyldithiocarbamate (dttiocarb sodium, DEDTC-Na), the active ingredient of Imuthrol@, a drug found to be active m the opportumstic infections occurrmg in AIDS, and its S-methyl metabohte. Plasma samples are treated wtth deuteromethyl iodide and DEDTC-Na is transformed into its deuteromethyl ester, which 1s then co-extracted with the S-methyl metabolite. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and selected-ion monitonng allow the specific determmation of both compounds. Linear cahbration curves were obtamed up to 4000 ng/ml This method has been suceesfully applied for pharmacokinettc studtes after Imuthtol and disulfiram, the dlmer of DEDTC, were admnustered to humans
