The British excavations at Beycesultan in southwestern Anatolia directed by Seton Lloyd, assisted by James Mellaart, became of importance outside archaeological circles with the report of an impressive Middle Bronze Age city, possibly the capital of Arzawa, an important Luwian state. Lloyd's disclosure in Anatolian Studies 6 (1956) io6ff, that the Level V palace had detailed resemblances with Cretan ones, but was earlier, was of particular relevance to those scholars who would connect Linear A with Luwian. This evidence has already become part of the argument for a Luwian invasion of Crete (cf. L. R. Palmer, Mycenaeans and Minoans [London 19651 342ff). The pottery and architecture of these Middle Bronze levels-the city of V and squatter occupation of IV c-a-are presented in the volume under review.
